Mathew Mokoroa

My name is Matthew Mokoroa. I live with my Mum, Dad and my 4 brothers aged 11, 10, 7, 6 and my little sister aged 2. I am the oldest child and I am 12 years of age. I had a liver transplant when I was 9 years old. I have also had hepatitis and meningitis's.

I started running when I was in Rarotonga at preschool. I usually always came 2nd place in my races at that time. I did manage to come 1st in the Rarotonga School Sporting event which included 6 schools. I came to New Zealand to have my transplant and have continued my schooling in Auckland.

I love athletics and especially enjoy running. I have been selected to attend the Transplant games in Brisbane in September 2009 competing in running. My dream is to win a gold medal for myself, my family, my coach and for New Zealand. I would also like to get a gold medal for my surgeon and the nurses that have given me a 2nd chance with life. I want to show everyone that I was worth it!!!

Post script:

Mathew achieved his goal ! he attended the 2009 transplant games and won his Gold medal, plus two silver medals for good measure ...well done Mathew!!

Mathew is now looking forward to the 2011 Transplant Games to be held in Gotenborg, Sweden.
